About the Park

Hakatere Conservation Park is part of one of the best wetlands in the country. A national wetland restoration project was started in 1997 and involves three premier sites: Whangamarino in Waikato, Awarua/Waituna in Southland and Ō Tū Wharekai here in Mid Canterbury.

The rivers, lakes, tarns and swamps of Ō Tū Wharekai have their own special range of species; some of which are rare, for example our kettle holes are home to 23 threatened plants. Although each wetland habitat is unique, all waterways are interconnected, breathing life into the Hakatere basin.

Where can I stay in the Hakatere Conservation Park?*

Camping
Lake Camp
- Camping is permitted on the northern and eastern sides of Lake Camp, where there are existing public toilets. However camping is not permitted on the southern side of Lake Camp.

Lake Heron - The campground boasts a family friendly atmosphere that has generations of families coming back year after year, but if you're just passing through tent sites can be purchased for $20.00 per night. This idyllic but basic campground has an honesty box system - please respect this great New Zealand tradition. For further information, get in touch with Arrowsmith Station.

Lake Clearwater - There is a camping ground near the boat ramp at the southern end of Lake Clearwater. Toilets and water (required to be boiled for drinking) are provided at the Lake Clearwater site but can be used by all campers. The Lake Clearwater Reserve has an honesty box provided. For more information, please click here. Lake Clearwater is one of the two DOC-run campgrounds in the park, with very basic facilities (toilet and running water) and is open from October to April (during NZ summer). The campsite is situated right on the waters edge and is a really special spot to watch the sun go down. $20 per person is the cost to spend a night here and you’ll have access to basic facilities (cold running water and public toilets).
