Hiking Trails for All Ages - For those who prefer to explore on foot, Mid Canterbury offers a network of hiking trails suitable for all ages and fitness levels. From easy strolls to challenging hikes, discover the diverse flora and fauna that make this region unique. Don't forget to bring your camera – there are photo opportunities at every turn.
Hakatere Conservation Park covers nearly 60,000 hectares of rugged mountain country, tussock lands, beech forest and sparkling clear rivers and lakes between two mighty rivers, the Rakaia and Rangitata. The headwaters of the rivers are notable landscapes including the upper Rangitata which featured in Lord of the Rings, The Two Towers (Mt Sunday was the location for Edoras).
The walking tracks within the park range from easy to advanced difficulty ratings and the duration ranges from 10 minutes to 2 days. Some of the tracks offer huts you can stay in overnight with bunk beds, heating and mattresses.
