'Red Cottage Staveley - Somers Cottage' is our luxury accommodation cottage! With views of Mt Somers that will blow your mind, it replicates the original Alford cottage in many ways, yet generates a comfortable atmosphere of its own unique accord. A double-sided fire between the lounge area and the bedroom, candles, and the modern but yet warm wooden ambience of this luxury new cottage create the perfect spark.
Like the original Alford cottage, you will be able to soak in the double outdoor baths and explore the brightest stars that makeup New Zealand's first starlight reserve. Enjoy local produce and wine, whilst watching the sunset over the surrounding mountains, after a day exploring all the local area has to offer.
'Red Cottage Staveley - Alford Cottage'. Rustic, romantic and relaxing! Our original cottage being an early farm building, has history, atmosphere and great views of Mt Alford, Mt Somers and Mt Hutt. The perfect romantic getaway from the hustle of life, in an environment you won’t want to leave. Open fires, candles, and the warm wooden ambience of this restored historical cottage create the perfect spark, along with local produce and wine, whilst watching the sunset over the surrounding mountains, after a day of exploring all the local area has to offer. Soak in the double outdoor baths and explore the brightest stars that makeup New Zealand's first starlight reserve.
Bring your own DVD of choice and try the 'Woolshed Theatre' which is only 50 metres from the cottages. This unique and complementary experience will be a highlight of your stay - Just enter your name on the clipboard for a time slot upon arrival, then grab a wine and a blanket and settle into a variety of couches while your movie is projected onto a big screen with surround sound.
All this is within an original Woolshed setting of native Rimu timber and English corrugated iron. After the movie head back to your cottage to watch the fire or sit on the deck and be amazed by the southern sky. Feel free to dine in or we will assist with recommending the restaurant options in nearby Staveley, Mt Somers or Methven.
Most choose to dine on the covered deck watching the sunset over the Southern Alps or on the sofa in front of the fire with a bottle of fine New Zealand wine. Continental breakfasts and antipasto platters are available by prior request.
Red Cottages Staveley is 1km from the renowned Staveley Store, gateway to the Sharplin Falls and Mt Somers hiking trails. It's only 10 minutes from the start of the Mt Hutt Ski area access road and 20 minutes to the town of Methven.
A wide list of activities to do in the area is available here and when staying with us we will talk you through all the local options. All of this is only 1 hour from Christchurch International Airport and 1 hour and 45 minutes from Lake Tekapo.

From Christchurch follow SH73 to Darfield where you turn left onto the 'Inland Scenic Route - SH72' This beautiful drive winds along the foothills and crosses the mighty Rakaia Gorge prior to arriving in Staveley. 1km prior to the Staveley Store on the right is the Red Cottages Staveley sign. Come to the office up the main drive. The trip is 106km and allow 1hr 30mins. Map Directions - https://goo.gl/maps/mR1KYEn4MxP2 From Tekapo Take SH8 to Fairlie, where you turn left onto SH79, to Geraldine, turning left again onto SH72 to Staveley.
