Matariki Star Gazing & Sunrise Soaks

5am & 7am

About

The rise of the Matariki star cluster signals the Māori New Year, a time of renewal, remembrance, and celebration in Aotearoa New Zealand. Matariki, also known as the Seven Sisters, is a group of stars that appear in the night sky in New Zealand during the winter months. The Māori New Year begins with the rise of Matariki, which traditionally marks the end of one year and the beginning of another. Matariki is an important cultural event for Māori people, and the significance of each star within the cluster is deeply rooted in Māori mythology and history.

To celebrate Matariki, Ōpuke Thermal Pools & Spa are hosting special star gazing and sunrise soaks on Friday 10 July 2026. Admire the beauty of our night sky from the comfort of our hot pools with the star gazing soak at 5am or watch the sun come up with the sunrise soak at 7am.

This family-friendly experience is open to all ages, with access to both the Discovery and Tranquility Pools. Spaces are limited, so we recommend booking early.

Guests will use the Discovery changing rooms for this experience. We kindly ask that you bring your own towel.

During these special sessions, alcohol and meals will not be served from the Tranquility Restaurant. However, you can pre-order a breakfast box to collect from our café, and coffee and hot drinks will be available on the morning.

The Discovery Café and Tranquility Restaurant will open from 10am as usual for full menu service.

This is a 90 minutes session.
